Commercial Driver’s License Theory

Introduces students to an overview of the CDL licensure and prepares them to get their CDL permit.  Vehicle inspection and the rules of Commercial Driving in the United States are discussed in detail. Safe driving and vehicle operations are reviewed in a classroom environment. Topics will include safety, hazardous materials, endorsements, basic equipment overview, and CDL permit test preparation. Students are required to get a Department of Transportation Physical and Drug Screen.  Students will be required to pass the CDL Permit test before continuing on to LOGM 102, 103, and 104.


Course Objectives:

  • Discuss general knowledge of the trucking industry
  • Recognize key safety principles in operating a commercial vehicle
  • Prepare for the CDL permit exam
  • Identify hazardous materials and the procedures for handling them
  • Prepare for multiple endorsements available to commercial truck drivers such as articulated vehicles, air brakes, passenger, and hazardous materials
  • Distinguish between safe, defensive driving practices and those practices that increase risk to the driver and the general public
  • Review the equipment on a commercial vehicle
  • Review and summarize the pre-trip process
  • Discuss the importance of the pre-trip inspection
  • Explain each individual part of the pre-trip process
  • Comply with DOT regulations by submitting to a DOT physical
  • Comply with DOT regulations by taking the CDL permit exam
  • Comply with the process to enroll in LOGM 102, 103, and 104 as explained by the instructor.
